Time your appliances to switch on and off
The Byebye Standby kit is a modern alternative to light timers that plug into home mains sockets. Instead of a timer, the kit includes two plug adapters and a separate switch. Plug anything into the adapters anywhere at home and put the switch somewhere else, such as by the front door (it comes with screws to fix it to a wall). Then it's possible to control anything attached to the adapters by pressing the switch. You can buy more adapters and use them with the same switch, or even buy another switch and have two groups of sockets, one connected to each switch (for instance, to have each switch control a separate set of lights at home). There's no need to worry about interference if your neighbours have the same kit, because the plugs and switches can be set to several different 'channels' by turning the dials on the front of them. Byebye Standby is a great way to easily cut electricity bills by quickly switching things off at once. For its £20 online price, it represents excellent value. Vista compatible: n/a
